Restaurant Review – Olive Bistro Pune

Menu Tasting events are always amazing. Food bloggers and food lovers alike get the first à la carte bite or sip of what’s on offer and they get to talk about it, sharing their experiences with those yet to partake of the same. This is what happened to me a couple of weeks back. That’s when Olive Bistro Pune Bar/Bakery/Bonhomie opened the floor for a menu-tasting event that got me so excited I grew busy imagining how my day was going to turn out.

Olive Bistro Pune

This authentic Italian and Mediterranean restaurant tagged along plenty of charm in keeping with the locations whose food inspired its cuisine. It had charm that was equal parts rustic and modern. I was surprised I felt so calm upon entering. I was actually rather hyped up so I knew when I felt myself breathing in the ambiance and sensing a level of unexpected relaxation. Suddenly I felt like I was at a spa; a food spa, in this case.

Whom we had for company at Olive Bistro Pune

I was immensely glad to meet the lovely Roxanne whose amazing food blog ‘The Tiny Taster’ is a wonderful read. Speaking with her taught me new things. Roxanne, you’re right, the belly does rule the mind.

Then there was the man of the hour, Chef Noah Barnes who with his causal grace and stylish goatee impressed us as to how someone so young could also be so talented. I mean, here was a man who was the youngest Indian chef at the Hans Bueschkens Young Chefs Challenge Asia Semi Final in 2011 held in Hong Kong.

Olive Bistro Pune Review – The Décor

White wicker chairs, dark wooden tables, elegant red-brick counters, sensational beige-brick ovens, tropical mat screens, wonderfully ethnic decor items like a quaint telephone and more besides, all added to the beauty of Olive Bistro Pune.

I thought I’d been teleported to Italy or the Mediterranean, based on where we sat here. It was nothing short of detailed. The perfection lay in these touches, from the odd but lovely mirror with mosaic borders and a chandelier that looks simply stunning despite the unconventional addition of plates and bowls to the curved metal arms.

Check out my photos and you’ll see what I mean when I say Olive Bistro displayed ideal attention to detail and lived up to their restaurant’s theme.

Olive Bistro Pune Review – The Menu

It was essentially custom made for us bloggers and foodies to enjoy. The balanced menu targeted a bistro-style cooking. It had some new dishes as well as some established classics going for it.

The Drinks

We began our feast with a cocktail. My choice: Fresh Mandarin Mojito. Not only did it more than live up to its name it was also the perfect accompaniment to my meal. The Bacardi Superior stole the show, being the major ingredient in this glass. Fresh Mandarin, Macerated Lemon, Mint and Fizz added to the balance and gave me cause to enjoy the meal to come.

As for the Lemon Grass Martini, I took a sip only to find the bitter taste of lemongrass too overpowering.

Olive Bistro Pune Review – The Soups & Salad

Roast Carrot & Dill Soup. Sounds like a winner and it is indeed. Thick yet refreshing with a slight tinge of dill, this number is a must-have for all soup lovers, even those who are not. I would definitely go back for this one. If you want to know the rest of the marvels that went into making this wonder, it consists of fine Puree of slow-roasted Carrots infused with a hint of Dill and finished with some Fresh Cream.

The Ob Minestrone is average in comparison to the earlier soup. This Italian classic is still yummy, what with aromatic Tomato Broth loaded with Winter Vegetables and finished with Butter Beans, Aged Grana Padano and Fresh Basil.

I tried my palate with the Red Wine Poached Pear Salad and since Rucola isn’t a personal favorite of mine I found I didn’t quite like this dish while others out there might love it. The peaches going into the making of this dish were poached for two hours, imparting to them a crunchy rather than mushy bite. I liked that in particular.

Olive Bistro Pune Review – The Main Course or as they like to call it, ‘Nourishments’

Owing to me not being a fan of sea-food, I passed on the Oregano Scented Indian Rawas; it smelled a bit too fishy for my liking.

I really liked the Saffron Polenta & Ratatouille Construct. The polenta was especially well flavored. The dish comprised Saffron and Thyme Polenta with Ratatouille and finished with Gorgonzola and Mushroom sauce. Mmm!

A main-course winner for me was the Beetroot Risotto Vs Risotto Milanese, which wasn’t ‘sweet’ even though it had beetroot (I liked it this way). The presentation was amazing and the taste even better. You betchya, what with the dish having a duet of Beetroot and Saffron Parmesan Risotto served with Winter Vegetables.

The Slow Roast Stuffed Chicken was great. The ‘jus’ was perfect and brought balance to the overall flavors this dish had going for it. It was essentially whole deboned Chicken with a stuffing of Walnut, Scarmoza, Spinach, and served with Herbed Lingdini, Pan Jus and Chimichuri. The dish screamed Italy.

Yet another dish that earned five stars in my book was the Smoked Chicken & Wild Mushroom Lasagna. It was flavorful, creamy and hearty, comprising wood-oven baked Lasagna with smoked and diced Chicken, Wild Mushroom and Parmesan Cheese.

Olive Bistro Pune Review – The Desserts

Whoever wanted to serve Tiramisu in a jar is a genius. The look of the Ob Tiramisu took me to a world of possibilities and one spoonful of the yummy-gooey marvel inside made me a believer that this is, quite literally, the BEST tiramisu in Pune. Most chefs fail to get it right. They don’t always succeed in adding enough kahlua/rum to the dessert. This one succeeded and tagged along a strong shot of coffee. I loved it, finished the whole jar in a matter of minutes.

I’m not too mad about Macaroons. When they gave us five cute looking differently flavored ones, you could imagine I wasn’t leaping with joy. I dislike the fact that they’re overly sweet. If you’re into that kind of thing, you’ll get a kick out of this one. I resolved to try the fillings alone and enjoyed the lemon-flavored macaroon’s filling best.

The Final Word

The food is spectacular and the colonial style architecture of the place is sure to impress. The wide courtyard in Olive Bistro plays host to musicians, stand-up comedy shows, short plays and bar nights. Everyone is sure to enjoy that. The staff is thoughtful, the place feels like a home away from home.

Olive Bistro delivers nothing less than excellence.
