Restaurant Review – Hoppipola Pune –The All Day Bar and Bonhomie

Hoppipola – The All Day Bar and Bonhomie – opened its doors to Pune last Thursday. Lifestylerr, along with the Food-adda team, was part of their launch celebrations. The Aundh area hardly has any upscale lounges or bars. Hoppipola enters the scene like a breath of fresh air coupled with rays of warmth. In other words, Aundh really could do with something as awesome as Hoppipola. With a bright and colorful restaurant board and spacious parking, this place impresses you from the get go.

As soon as you enter Hoppipola – The All Day Bar and Bonhomie – you’ll see it lives up to its name. Yes, there’s a lot of ‘bonhomie’ (friendliness) here. The ambiance is fresh, white colored walls with colorful seating to compliment it. It has plenty of color, especially on the walls, made to represent fun elements.

To top it all, it’s not like the lounges which usually have cramped spaces. There is enough space to move about and even shake a leg if you are in the mood. Hoppipola has indoor seating with a roomy corner dedicated to books, comics, arcade games and much more. The outdoors has a distinct fun vibe with a wall dedicated to colorful letterboxes that add immense charm to the space.

You open a letterbox to find a surprise gift waiting for you. Lot’s of new ideas like the letterbox where a letter can change hands with a new unknown friend in some other restaurant branch of Hoppipola, like a pen pal, takes socializing back to the good old days. This idea is forgotten these days, what with Facebook and Twitter, where we interact digitally instead of in person. This idea alone is a great way to make new friends and find love in the unlikeliest of ways.

I was glad to see Hoppipola Pune attracted a large number of visitors on opening day. There were teens and youngsters, office-goers and foodies who all contributed to the fun and sassy vibe. It felt amazing. There was such camraderie and expectation in the air.

Hoppipola Pune, food and drinks review:

We were a large food-loving group. This meant we managed to taste almost everything on the menu. The carte was quite playful in design and layout, coaxing us to check out all the pages just to appreciate the fun descriptions each item had going for it.

We ordered the Totopos (nachos and dips), Peanutty Wings, Chickiti’tah (Ginger and Tangerine flavored Grilled Chicken; the dish also recalled an Abba song to mind), Rasta Chicken, Beer Batter Shrimps, Pimped Shrimps, OMG (Cheese Stuffed crisp fried mushrooms; and yeah it was ‘omg’ alright), Coin Lamb Burgers, Chickburgers, The Mario ( Chicken Sausage Pizza; yummo)and a few other things.

While the pimped shrimps can be passed over (nothing too exceptional about it), the other dishes were delicious to the core. They will compliment any drink on the menu to perfection. Besides, the portions were hearty. A special mention to the Beer Batter Shrimps, which melted in the mouth and had this really awesome crisp outer coat that made it one of the best batter fried prawns I’ve savored to date.

We ordered those options (above) a little more than two or so times while sipping on some crazy and innovative cocktails. These drinks had some brazen names. There was the usual LIIT, the Kafir-Lime and Lychee Caipiroshka, Watermelon and Basil Mojito, the Hoppipola Special, Dirty Martini, the Bellinis, Sex on the Roof, Whisky Sour and a few more.

The Kamikaze Shots came in cute test tubes placed in a jar of ice, potent enough to knock you out in a few shots. The Caipiroshka arrived in a jar with lychee bites and the kafir lime adding the right zing to the mix. The Mojito had fresh watermelon cubes and the basil blend was perfect, imparting a refreshing whiplash to the palate.

An offbeat drink was the Hoppipola Special, which is a strawberry and vodka drink with a hint of chocolate and some green chilies. Loved the flavor the chili added in this punchy-sweet drink. It tantalized the taste buds a few times over.

The Price:

What’s impressive about Hoppipola Pune (and Hoppipola Bangalore for that matter) is the price of their menu items. Not only are they remarkably reasonable the portions are quite huge. It’s sure to be a hit among college kids simply because of this factor.

The Staff:

My Hoppipola review will be incomplete if I don’t mention the friendly staff at Pune. If I have ever enjoyed interacting with staff and sharing a giggle or two anywhere other than at Hard Rock Café, it is at Hoppipola. Shiva, one of the servers, is someone we’d want to be around every time we go to Hoppipola. This man knows his job and does it effortlessly.

The fun drink-games hosted at Hoppipola are super fun whether you are in a big group or just a couple looking to gel with new people. With the feisty décor, interesting bar nibbles and drinks, not to forget the joyous games and happy staff, you are bound to leave as High and Happy Hoppipolans.

So Puneites and Punekars head there ASAP, if you haven’t already visited the place. If you have, go again. You can’t miss Hoppipola!
