Food for the Brain

Do you Live to Eat or Eat to Live? In any case, you obviously know that food has always been necessary for the overall growth of the body including the brain. Most of the times when the brain is not in use up to its optimal level or maximum capacity, it starts to weaken. In many cases this is a result of ageing. A study has found out that if you eat the correct food, it will definitely help in increasing the mental strength and also keep the brain fit. Really?

Yes, some foods are termed as super brain food because they help in the proper functioning of the brain. It has also been found that there is some special super brain food which if fed to kids will help in a better brain development. So all you parents can add a few more items to your list while feeding the child.

All types of vitamins, proteins, correct amount of carbohydrates etc. are required to improve memory power and thus the functioning of the brain. The super brain foods are natural items which do not have any preservatives or artificial agents added to them.

The first one in the list has to be a food that resembles the brain. Yes, you guessed it right – Walnut. Walnuts have omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids and are the most effective of all brain foods. Fats are very important for proper development of the cell membrane in the brain. The level of Serotonin, which is present in our brain and is responsible for our behaviour and moods, also increases with the help of walnuts. You can get rid of all your antidepressants if you consume walnuts or flaxseed every day.

All kinds of nuts are considered as super brain food. Consuming anything from peanuts, cashews, almonds to the most exotic nuts will enhance your memory power and also improve the neurological health. Nuts also help you in thinking clearly and are effective mood enhancers. You can try hazelnuts and pecans too.

The next in queue are wholegrain foods. Not only do they keep the brain healthy but are very good for the entire body. Whole grains consist of folate which helps in improving the blood flow to the brain which in turn helps it function well.

Sunflower and pumpkin seeds have also been termed as super brain food. Sunflower seeds and even wheat germ are high in thiamine which boosts memory power. The pumpkin seeds contain many nutritious elements like zinc, omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids, vitamin A and vitamin E. These again contribute to better thinking capacities.

Different types of berries like blueberries, blackberries, strawberries and others are also very good for overall brain development.

Including items like avocados, tomatoes, eggs, red cabbage, broccoli, eggplant, spinach, yogurt etc. can also help in enhancing the overall functioning of the brain. Add them to your daily diet. Eating them occasionally may not be very effective.

Green Tea

Green tea is also a great energy booster for the brain. It clears all the fatigue in the brain and also helps in curing many brain disorders.

Besides these, salmon is a great super brain food for kids and chocolates can also help in increasing focus and attention. But make sure your kids consume chocolates in limited proportions.

Thus, if you incorporate all these foods in your daily diet, your brain will always remain healthy and free from disorders no matter what the age.
