Cluster Beans with Gram Flour Dumplings (Phalli Gatte ki Sabzi)

This is a Gujarati recipe and is popularly known as Guvar Muthiya nu Shaak where Muthiya refers to gram flour dumplings. It was my mom’s favorite and mine too. The recipe makes cluster beans more tasty for those who are picky about food. It is also an innovative way to make cluster beans in gravy style as opposed to the regular dry vegetable that most people make.

Cluster beans recipe

Ingredients:

  • 250 gms cluster beans chopped in 2 inch pieces
  • 1 cup gram flour/besan
  • 1 tbsp carom seeds/ajwain
  • 2 tbsp garam masala
  • 1/2 tbsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp red chilli powder
  • 2 tbsp coriander powder
  • Salt and sugar to taste
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1tbsp mustard

Method:

  1. Mix gram flour, salt, pinch of turmeric, carom seeds and water to make a smooth paste like idli batter (not too runny or very thick)
  2. Heat 1 tbsp oil in the cooker. Add mustard seeds and allow them to crackle. Add the turmeric and chopped cluster beans.
  3. Add all the masalas, salt, sugar and mix well. Add 2 1/2 cups of water and let it boil.
  4. Now just release the flour dumplings in this boiling water. Since the batter is not very thick, you can’t shape the dumplings and hence need to release them like pakoras.
  5. Do not stir after adding pakoras. Now wait for 3 whistles and serve hot.
